Growing with Gersh: Maureen Miller, Director of Educational Operations

We’re thrilled to celebrate Maureen Miller, Director of Educational Operations at Gersh Autism Academy! Maureen’s journey is a true Gersh story, one rooted in growth, dedication, and heart.

She began her teaching career at Gersh in 2014 and has called it home ever since, growing from classroom teacher to Curriculum Resource, Assistant Principal, Principal, and now Director of Educational Operations. Known for her warmth, insight, and commitment to student success, Maureen has shaped the academic and emotional foundation of countless students and staff members over the past decade.

For Maureen, Gersh isn’t just a workplace, it’s a family. Her ability to build strong relationships, inspire growth, and celebrate progress makes her an integral part of our leadership team. We’re so proud to have her leading the way and continuing to expand her impact across all Gersh campuses!

You’ve been part of Gersh for over a decade. What first inspired you to join the team, and what has made you stay all these years?

What first inspired me to join Gersh was the school’s unique mission; accepting students with disabilities and creating programs that truly meet each child’s individual needs. Over the years, what has made me stay, even though it may sound cliché, is that Gersh really is a family. I’ve built meaningful relationships, watched students make tremendous strides, and developed strong, trusting partnerships with parents. Seeing our students’ progress and the confidence their families place in us is incredibly rewarding.

You’ve grown from classroom teacher to Director of Educational Operations. How has each stage of your journey shaped your leadership style today?

Each stage of my career has given me a deeper understanding of the challenges and successes experienced across different roles. That perspective allows me to lead with compassion and empathy. Having walked in the shoes of a teacher, an assistant principal, and a principal, I understand the demands of each position and strive to provide the right support to help others succeed

What does a “good day” look like for you at Gersh?

A good day at Gersh always starts with being in the classrooms and seeing our students engaged and learning. It’s also about knowing I’ve made a difference; whether by helping align operations across sites or supporting our administrative teams so they can focus on what truly matters: our students.

Graduation is one of your favorite moments of the year. What makes that celebration so meaningful to you?

Graduation is truly a testament to the entire Gersh community’s hard work and dedication throughout the year. Whether it’s a high school graduation or an elementary moving-up ceremony, it’s a time to reflect on each student’s journey; where they started in September and how far they’ve come by June. For many families, it’s a moment they never thought they would see, and being able to give them that experience is incredibly powerful. It’s more than just a ceremony; it’s a celebration of perseverance, growth, and community.

Gersh places a big emphasis on relationships with students, families, and staff. How do you nurture those connections in your role?

Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. I prioritize open communication, active listening, and being present, not just for our students, but for families and staff as well. By fostering trust and collaboration, we create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported, which ultimately benefits our students most.

What’s one piece of advice would you give to new teachers or staff who are just joining the Gersh family?

Be resilient and lead with heart. Treat each child as if they were your own and remember that it’s okay not to have all the answers. Every day, you are making a difference in a child’s life, even on the hardest days. Embrace the journey; it’s one of the most meaningful experiences you’ll ever have.
