Growing with Gersh: Celeste Gagliardi, Chief Education Officer

We’re thrilled to share that Celeste Gagliardi has been promoted to Chief Education Officer at Gersh Autism Academy.

Celeste has been a part of Gersh for over a decade, beginning her journey in 2012 as Executive Director and Principal. Under her leadership, Gersh Autism Academy West Hempstead campus grew from serving 59 students to more than 200, and she played an instrumental role in expanding Gersh’s reach to Washington State and Puerto Rico. Known for her deep connection to students and families, Celeste brings both strategic vision and heartfelt dedication to her new role.

As Chief Education Officer, Celeste will oversee the academic and programmatic direction of all Gersh Autism Academy campuses, ensuring excellence in education and services across the organization.

1. Congratulations on your promotion! What does stepping into the Chief Education Officer role mean to you personally and professionally?

As someone who grew up with a significantly disabled family member, I personally understand the difficult journey of the families we serve. This position allows me to create an environment that caters to the unique needs of these beautiful children which in and of itself changes the lives of each and every Gersh family. Professionally, I have been and always will  be humbled by the opportunity to serve this incredible population of children and their families.  I also feel honored to continue the journey of identifying talented people to work with these children and who also dedicate their lives to making the world a better place for children and adults on the autism spectrum.

2. You’ve been with Gersh for over a decade. Looking back, what moments stand out most from your journey here?

I can’t choose one moment but I can say that at graduation each year, I couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of students and the staff who make that day possible! Tears of joy pour down my face throughout the entire ceremony especially when I look into their parents eyes.

3. Gersh has been expanding across multiple states and programs. What excites you most about the future of Gersh Autism Academy?

There is a great need for the programming we provide to these individuals.  Expanding means  we can get to more and more children and families and truly change their lives!

4. What do you hope to bring to this role in the coming year, both for students and for staff?

Inspiring our staff by continuous recognition of the truly incredible work they do is my goal this year and my work for students is to ensure that we expand our programs to continue to  enhance the offerings we can bring to students both academically and vocationally.

5. You’ve mentored many administrators across Gersh. How do you approach leadership development, and what advice do you share with new leaders?

Gersh programming and our expertise in advocacy for our families is unique and although our leaders are schooled in leadership, there is much more involved in being a Gersh administrator.  Our seasoned leaders are mentors to our new leaders for this reason.  My advice to all school leaders is to be sure they lead with kindness and compassion, and to always come from a place of understanding with our students, families and staff. This philosophy is shared in weekly  leadership meetings where we have an opportunity to support one another. It is also key for our leaders to take care of themselves so they have the capacity to take care of their school community.

6. Outside of work, how do you recharge and stay inspired for the important work you do every day?

Spending time with my husband enjoying quiet dinners on the weekends and spending time with my granddaughter definitely helps me to recharge.

7. What would you say to families who are just getting to know Gersh Autism Academy for the first time?

I would tell them that we are here for them and that we offer their children  a caring, nurturing environment where they are understood.  It is through this understanding that their child will gain skills necessary to be their individual best!
