Welcome Dan McKeon,  NY Regional Director!

We’re excited to formally welcome Daniel J. McKeon, Regional Director of Gersh Autism Academy’s New York campuses, who joined us at the start of this school year. With more than two decades of experience in school and district leadership, higher education, and public service, Dan brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to helping students on the autism spectrum succeed.

Throughout his career, Dan has been known for building strong systems, supporting staff, and creating learning environments rooted in safety, trust, and meaningful progress. In his role at Gersh, he oversees operations and program quality across multiple campuses, ensuring each student receives individualized, high-quality support.

We’re grateful to have Dan leading our NY teams and are excited for you to get to know more about him, his background, and the heart he brings to this work.

1. What inspired you to work in the field of education, specializing in autism?

I’ve always been drawn to work that makes a real impact. Education does that every day, but working with students on the autism spectrum adds depth and purpose. It challenges you to think outside the box, communicate clearly, and see success in a hundred different ways. That’s what keeps me inspired.

2. Can you tell us a little about your background and experience before joining Gersh?

I’ve been a teacher, principal, and district superintendent, leading teams in both general and special education. My work has always focused on building strong systems that put students first and give staff what they need to succeed. At every level, I’ve learned that the best schools are built on relationships centered on trust, teamwork, and follow-through.

3. What drew you to Gersh Autism Academy?

Gersh actually walks the walk when it comes to individualized education. There’s room here to be innovative and still stay grounded in what matters — the student in front of you. That combination of heart and purpose is what drew me in.

4. What does your role at Gersh look like day to day?

No two days are alike, and that’s part of what I enjoy. I spend time at all of our locations working with staff, problem-solving, making sure programs are strong, and supporting student success. It’s a mix of big-picture planning and hands-on leadership — and that balance keeps me engaged.

5. What do you hope to bring to your school/community/team/students in the coming year?

Clarity and consistency. When people know what’s expected and feel supported, they do their best work. My goal is to keep building systems that make life easier for staff and more meaningful for students.

6. What’s one thing you’ve learned from your students or staff that’s stuck with you?

Progress doesn’t always look the way you expect it to. Sometimes it’s a huge milestone, sometimes it’s a quiet step forward that only a few people notice. Both matter.

7. Outside of work, how do you like to spend your time?

Most of my free time is spent with my wife, Kiki, and our three sons Connor, Aidan, and Jack— family always comes first. When I can, I’m on my boat enjoying the water, making a fool of myself on the golf course, or working around the house. I also love sports and the Yankees, Jets, and Knicks have my allegiance.

8. What would you say to a family considering Gersh Autism Academy for their child?

Come see it for yourself. You’ll meet people who genuinely care, who understand your child’s needs, and who work hard to help them grow. Gersh isn’t a one-size-fits-all place — and that’s exactly why it works.
